BASELINE CONCUSSION TESTING

What is?

BASELINE CONCUSSION TESTING

The only FDA-cleared concussion assessment aids for ages 5-59. ImPACT® is the most widely-used computerized neurocognitive test to help evaluate and manage concussions. We are able to provide on-site baseline and post-test administration.

What Is ImPACT?
ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, only FDA-approved, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. ImPACT is a computerized program that evaluates and documents multiple aspects of neurocognitive functioning, including verbal and visual memory, attention span, brain processing speed, reaction time, and post-concussive symptoms.

What is ImPACT Pediatric?

ImPACT Pediatric is the only FDA-cleared concussion assessment aid for ages 5-11. Pediatric concussion management is a growing concern.  ImPACT Pediatric gives healthcare providers the tools to be proactive and the data to be confident in their approach to concussion evaluation for patients ages 5-11.  Use ImPACT Pediatric to establish baseline data in healthy patients, to provide insight into cognitive changes if an injury occurs, and to aid in the development of a personalized course of treatment.

How long does it take?
ImPACT takes 25-30 minutes to complete.

ImPACT Pediatric takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

What do I do?
The video-game style online based test measures several different tasks which challenge your attention span, working memory, sustained and selective attention time, non-verbal problem solving, and reaction time.

What is a baseline test?
A baseline ImPACT test is completed prior to the start of the sports season via a secure web portal and taken via a desktop computer that has an internet connection and a mouse.  A baseline test is very helpful in evaluating concussions because the baseline results are specific to each individual. A baseline test is administered in a group setting by a Pacific Sports Spa employee, ideally before the start of a sports season. Baseline scores are collected and stored on the ImPACT HIPAA compliant server.

What is an ImPACT Pediatric baseline test?

A Pediatric baseline is an iPad-based platform that takes 10-15 minutes to complete.  It is designed to hold a child’s attention and delivered 1:1.  We highly encourage all Pediatric athletes to have their parent or guardian present to assist with symptoms and questionnaires.  ImPACT Pediatric measures multiple key aspects of cognitive functioning in a computerized test – including cognitive speed and impulse control, immediate and delayed memory, nonverbal spatial span, and more.

How often do I have to take a baseline test?
ImPACT Pediatric tests are recommended to be taken once per year.  ImPACT baseline tests, which are medically recognized for athletes between the ages of 12-59 are valid for two years however it is recommended that all athletes through college level take a baseline yearly to account for increased cognitive functioning and reaction times.

Where can I take an ImPACT test?
Pacific Sports Spa normally will come to your school, team or organization to perform the testing in a group setting for ImPACT tests, or individually for ImPACT Pediatric baselines.

How much does it cost?
ImPACT baseline with post-tests: $30

ImPACT Pediatric baseline with post-tests: $40

School district pricing available if test costs will be covered by a school or team. Call us for details.

Is ImPACT the only thing used to clear an athlete to return to play after a concussion?
ImPACT is not a diagnostic tool.  Only a licensed healthcare professional can diagnose and treat a concussion.  Instead, ImPACT can be used before and after a licensed healthcare provider has determined that a concussion occurred:

  • In addition to establishing neurocognitive performance baselines, healthcare providers use ImPACT test scores as an important component of their assessment of an injury.
  • Post-test scores may be used by a licensed provider to inform an effective concussion treatment course of action.
  • ImPACT may be administered multiple times after a clinician has diagnosed a concussion – scores can be used to help measure rehabilitation and to consider whether to return an injured individual back to activity.

Does Pacific Sports Spa evaluate or diagnose concussion?

No.  While we do have a license Athletic Trainer and Nurse Practitioner associated with our organization, both of whom have undergone ImPACT training and hold ITAT (ImPACT Trained Athletic Trainer) and CIC (Certified ImPACT Consultant) credentials we do not perform evaluations or diagnose concussions.

Where does my athlete go to get evaluated, and will my athletes’ doctor or Provider use ImPACT in their evaluation?

We encourage you to continue using your athletes’ current healthcare provider.  Being the only FDA-cleared concussion assessment aid, your provider, even if completely unfamiliar with ImPACT should be able to use the results as an aid in their evaluation.  All reports are extremely easy to read and interpret. We are proactively partnering with several medical providers in SW Washington and provide them with ImPACT training at no-cost if they are interested in making ImPACT part of their regular concussion evaluation process. If your child’s doctor is interested, please have them contact us!
